Wageningen Liberation Celebrations 2026

Wageningen45 (National Committee for the Commemoration of the 1945 Capitulations)

Produce the programmes for 4 and 5 May at 5 Mei Plein in Wageningen.

For the fifth consecutive year, we produced the television programme ‘Vuur van de Vrijheid’, which was broadcast live on NPO1 on 4 May. Against the historic backdrop of Hotel de Wereld, the programme theatrically marked the transition from remembrance to embracing and cherishing freedom. In close collaboration with NOS, Theater Na de Dam and Wageningen45, XSAGA created the programme, featuring meaningful performances by artists including Simone Kleinsma, Ruben Hein, Shary-Ann, Jet van der Steen and many others, accompanied by the musical direction of Sven Hammond.

Around midnight, the National Liberation Fire was lit. Fourteen ‘Difference Makers’ then received the flame, after which more than 2,800 relay runners were cheered on as they began their overnight journey across the Netherlands. On 5 May, celebrating and cherishing freedom took centre stage during the National Commemoration of the 1945 Capitulations. This national and meaningful ceremony was accompanied by music from the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee Orchestra and Charley Marie, alongside two films produced by XSAGA Video: a portrait of the Letters Campaign featuring student Luca van Eekhout and veteran Mr Van de Logt, and a compilation capturing the Liberation Fire relay during the night of 4 to 5 May.
