Nationale Opera & Ballet
How can all Amsterdam residents be connected through dance as part of Amsterdam's 750th anniversary celebrations?

Under the title "All Amsterdam Dances", we brought dance to all eight city districts in collaboration with Dutch National Ballet. Each district's theatre or performance venue was highlighted with its own distinctive colour, creating a unique identity for every location. At each venue, local dance schools came together to showcase the diversity of dance styles represented in their neighbourhood. The programme concluded by inviting the audience onto the stage to dance alongside the performers, transforming spectators into participants.
The project culminated in a sold-out finale at Dutch National Opera & Ballet, where 130 dancers from across the city performed In C by Sasha Waltz. This contemporary dance work consists of 53 movement sequences, within which dancers are free to choose how and when they respond to one another, following a shared framework of rules. In an increasingly busy and densely populated city, Dutch National Ballet brought this work to Amsterdam as a reflection of everyday urban life. Just as the dancers continuously negotiate space and respond to one another on stage, we all "dance" through the city every day, shaping our interactions with the people around us.
