museum Rembrandthuis
The Museum Rembrandthuis wanted to strengthen its connection with the neighbourhood and the city where Rembrandt grew up: Amsterdam. XSAGA was commissioned to bring this ambition to life through the official reopening, creating an experience for both invited guests and the general public.

The Rembrandt House is a magical place: the home where one of the world’s most famous artists lived for almost 20 years and where he created some of his greatest works. Amsterdam is Rembrandt, and Rembrandt is Amsterdam. The city’s DNA can be found throughout his life story, his artworks, and his house, which has stood in the heart of the city for more than 400 years. The master painter lived and worked here for almost two decades. This important connection between Rembrandt and the capital was celebrated in various ways during the reopening.
The official reopening took place at the Zuiderkerk, embracing the theme ‘Amsterdam’. Upon arrival, guests, including Mayor Femke Halsema, were welcomed with traditional Amsterdam songs performed on the church’s carillon, a special performance by true Amsterdam artist Sophie Straat, and an Amsterdam medley by the ZO! Gospel Choir. A series of three vox-pop videos titled ‘Rembrandt was here’ formed an important thread throughout the programme. Presenter Ciana Mayam took to the streets to explore the connection between Rembrandt and the people of Amsterdam today.
Two days later, the public had the opportunity to visit several locations across the city that held a special connection to Rembrandt. At each location, visitors discovered why these places were significant to the life and work of the master painter. One example was De Waag, where Rembrandt created his world-famous painting ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp’.
