Create and produce the stage and party program for the 2025 Boekenbal, celebrating and experiencing the theme “Your Mother Tongue."
For the very first time, XSAGA was entrusted with both the creative desing and production of this iconic event. And this year’s edition was no ordinary one: it marked the opening of the 90th Boekenweek, a special milestone.
At Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, guests were welcomed for a stage and party program. The entire evening revolved not only around the anniversary celebration—highlighted by specially designed garlands—but also around the Boekenweek theme “Your Mother Tongue.”
The theme came to life through a varied stage program, treating guests to a true “Mother Tongue trip.” With performances ranging from video and music to text and dance, the evening showcased and celebrated the linguistic diversity of the Netherlands. From Groningen classics by Imca Marina, to the Hague and Sinti sounds of folk singer Rein Mercha, from the meeting of Sign Language and dance, to the iconic video clips of Osdorp Posse, and Herman Finkers’ Twentish translation of Le Petit Prince—the power and pride of these many mother tongues could be felt throughout. This sentiment was further underscored in a personal way by CPNB director Eveline Aendekerk, who delivered her speech in her own mother tongue, Roermonds.
For this special evening, XSAGA Video created a powerful opening film: a nostalgic journey through 90 years of Boekenweek.
The stage program ended in a grand performance by Showkorps Irene, officially opening the Boekenbal. What followed was a vibrant celebration featuring multiple DJs, a Silent Mother Tongue experience, and a poetry bar called “Bar Moi Eem!”, serving up some shots of language.
