Vattenfall
How do you inaugurate an impressive, large offshore wind farm located in the middle of the sea? And how do you celebrate this unique moment in a meaningful and photogenic way with political and business stakeholders, while including representatives of the next generation?
XSAGA, commissioned by Vattenfall, BASF & Allianz, managed the production of the historic opening of Wind Farm Hollandse Kust Zuid—the largest wind farm in the world built without subsidies. An impressive 139 wind turbines, each towering 250 meters high, were constructed 18 kilometers off the coast near the beach of IJmuiden and were spectacularly inaugurated by His Majesty the King in the presence of numerous dignitaries.
The opening event spanned two days, with the first day focused on ‘the next generation.’ Local children from the coastal community were invited to the familiar beach, where they attended lessons on new forms of energy. This reinforced the client’s commitment and ambition to become fossil fuel-free within a generation. The first day concluded festively with the project team of Hollandse Kust Zuid celebrating this milestone.
On the second day, the focus was on the partners and builders, who gathered at the most sustainable beach pavilion in the Netherlands. They witnessed a series of informative discussions highlighting how, alongside sound business ambitions, personal drive and conviction played a crucial role in realizing this ambitious project.
The highlight of the day was a collaboration with 150 volunteers from the Vattenfall Foundation, who formed a ‘human turbine’ on the beach to give attendees a tangible sense of the immense scale of a wind turbine. This remarkable display resulted in a unique image that captured the attention of the media, serving as an indirect testament to the magnitude of this extraordinary collaborative project.
"At the start of the project, XSAGA guided us by painting a vision, crafting a story, and creating an experience. What resonated with us deeply was the combination of fun, boldness, and bringing people together through a shared experience. We very much enjoyed collaborating to shape and execute the concept—a monumental task. XSAGA worked patiently and persistently to ensure that both the overarching vision and every detail were perfectly aligned, resulting in a flawless event. The day itself ran like clockwork. Compliments for the dedication and enthusiasm!"
