THE OPENING of the cultural season

Stichting Uitmarkt

Organise an event to mark the Opening of the Cultural Season. The multi-day event should provide an inspiring preview of next year’s plans, when The Opening will become a nationwide event. The event should celebrate the enormous diversity of the arts and cultural landscape, showcase emerging talent on a national stage, and inspire and encourage audiences in a surprising way to purchase tickets for the upcoming season.

Traditionally, the Netherlands celebrates the national opening of the cultural season on the final weekend of August. This year, however, the celebration took place not with a large festival on Museumplein, but from the iconic Royal Theatre Carré.

Visitors could sign up for a Sneak Peek Tour through the historic former circus theatre, discovering five unexpected locations where they were treated to exclusive previews of the upcoming cultural season. The content of these encounters was kept secret in advance, ensuring an element of surprise and creating opportunities for new discoveries.

In addition, the theatre’s grand stage hosted two television programmes that were broadcast live on NTR and AVROTROS. Presenter Eric Corton hosted a spectacular show featuring performances by, among others, 16-year-old Joshua Markiet, Benjamin Clementine, Claudia de Breij, Naaz, The New Cool Collective, and the Groot Omroep Koor.

On Sunday, visitors queued early for the free public rehearsals of Musical Awards: The Kick-Off, where well-known and new musical productions followed one another in rapid succession. Presenters Frits Sissing and Marlijn Weerdenburg showcased highlights from productions including Les Misérables, Pretty Woman, De Hospita, Grease, and Disney’s AIDA.
