Leiden2022
The opening of Leiden2022, the year in which Leiden became the European City of Science, was originally conceived as a live theatre programme at the Stadsgehoorzaal. When COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible to gather larger audiences, Leiden2022 asked XSAGA to quickly develop an alternative format that would allow the opening to still be shared and celebrated with as many people as possible—both in a festive and content-rich way.
XSAGA developed a film in which scientist and presenter Auke-Florian Hiemstra travelled through Leiden in an iconic Leiden2022 tuk-tuk, passing several highlights of the year ahead.The film had a total duration of one hour, mirroring the originally planned theatre programme, and was simultaneously watched at its premiere from multiple countries. Afterwards, both the full and an edited version of the film remained available for long-term sharing, serving as an introduction to this unique year.
